The day after our heli adventure we decided a rest day would be beneficial. Some good old fashioned sight seeing was on the menu...

We went to Myvatn (1.5hr drive from Akureyri) to a natural hot spring which is located between two continental plates. And did I mention it is a cave as well!!! The water was so hot but we slowly got acclimatized and got our entire bodies in. One of the coolest things I have ever seen/done! On the way to the hot springs a guy working at a gas station was mentioning that there was some whales in a bay near by that have been feeding for the past 8 days. On our way home from the hot springs we decided to try our luck and go to the one bay he described. With in seconds of pulling up we saw some movement down by the water. We all hurried down the mountain side and were all instantly in awe. 2 hump back whales swimming back and forth feasting! We were fortunate enough to see one of the whales jump out of the water! AMAZING!

We have finished the snowboarding portion of our trip in Akureyri. We took advantage of the 2 resorts that were near by, Hlidarfjall and siglufjordur. They were not open but we used their roads to gain some elevation. Without the roads we would have to resort to more hiking than we were already doing. Built a couple features with some beautiful back drops. The one over our rental car has a waterfall and a fjord in the background but the weather came in as soon as we were ready to shoot!

Gave our place a nice clean and off we went back to Reykjavik.

Nikita was generous enough to let our crew stay at their downtown store front location, which has an amazing apartment and office above it. Not to mention a backyard with mini ramp and large area to host parties and bbqs. And that is exactly what they did. Geiri the marketing manager manned the grill and cooked up some of the finest hot dogs iceland has to offer. (*Hot dogs are Icelands most popular food* no joke!)

We hit the streets and went out with the crew. The group of people in and around Nikita have such a good vibe to them. Everyone is so nice and are constantly giving back to the sport.

Nightlife in Iceland is amazing. Everyone is so unique and is not afraid to be themselves. Saying that, you can go speak to a total stranger in the bar and they wont be stand offish. Totally welcoming and nice.

Iceland is amazing and I would totally recommend it. Only thing I would advise is that the weather changes very fast. It snowed in the city 2 days before we got there and while we were there it was in and around 15degrees. Some advice to pass on is that your best bet will be to go April. Best weather/daylight/snow ratio!

The team together at last!

We made it to Akuyeri. 5hr drive along the west coast of the island heading north from Reykjavik.

Our Cabin is amazing. We got a hookup through Hallldor Helgason’s Grand Mother.

Our first day of riding consisted of a serious river crossing. We took our boots off and braved the glacier run off to get to a patch of snow we scoped from the road. The snow line is quite high so we need to hike to everything.

Second day of riding we went with arctic heli skiing (www.arcticheliskiing.com) for a bump up to the top. JB and his crew are super nice guys! Great views and great weather. What more can you ask for! At the end of the day we boarded down to the bottom of the snow line and hiked out to the jeep. 16hr day and daylight the enire time. Got home at 11pm and there was still tons of light in the sky!

We are all so beat today. Going for a hot tub in some natural hot springs between to 2 continental plates. After our relaxation time we are going to hit a rail up by one of the resorts!

Hello from the Kex Hostel in Reykjavik Iceland.

Myself (Byron), Craig Beaulieu and John Scarth(SBC) Have spent our first day in Iceland. The other 2 riders (Matt Belzile and Vera Janssen) for our trip missed their flight to a combination of border troubles and an accident on their way to Seatac Airport. They arrive Wednesday morning at 7am local time.

Tomorrow we are off in our 4x4 Nissan SUV/Jeep thingy 5hrs north to Akureyri. Apparently there is tons of snow there still! We are all Stoked to see the Country side. Judging by our 30min drive from the airport it feels like we are on the moon. Lots of lava rock scattered over the flat barren land.

There is a total of 4 hours of complete darkness during the day here. Currently it is 10PM and sun is long gone but the sky has a bit of light left in it.

Being patient and waiting for sunshine and snow paid off -
Back from Japan for only 8 hours, Chris Rasman and Colin DWatt manned up and joined JF Fortin and myself on a fun day up in the Whistler Backcountry!

We built a sick jump and all 3 of us got shots,
then Rasman sent a HUGE back7 into baked snow and snapped his board,
so him and JF went down early while DWatt and I scoped around to some more spots until sundown..

Calgary Road Trip!

As her eyes awoke to a blaring alarm clock at 4:15 am , Breanna Stangeland had to finish packing her truck. After completing this great task, she then hit the road to pick up the comedian of the trip, Jon Versteeg.On Breanna’s route to Jon’s place, she was followed by the police from Tamarisk to Alpine. Not really a good start to the day since she had to pick me up in Pemberton which is 25 minutes north of Whistler. When the crew got to my house, it was approximately 5:45. We loaded up the truck and away we went to grab breakfast at the local McDonalds. (laughing) 15 minutes breakfast later, we left for Calgary. With loud music and a bunch of rowdy punks in the car, I knew this trip was going to be a good one.

Aproaching Lillooet, we decided to stop in, have coffee and try on balaclavas at Lightfoot gas. Couple hours later, we arrived in Sicamous. Breanna remembered that there is some funny animals we needed to see at the local ice creamery. To our surprise, a camel, a donkey, and a lama. Jon and myself were in shock! We stayed for a bit and took funny photos of the weird animals they had at this place.

Leaving from there, we were content. We had one more stop before leaving Sicamous, and that stop was Tim Hortons for more delicious coffee. We jumped back in the car and was on our route to Banff to meet Craig Mcmorris. (who is staying with us in the room) Leaving banff, we only had 1 more hour left until our drive was finally over. Getting into Calgary, we scoped out some rails that we will be hitting when we aren’t competing for the Canadian Open. It was a mellow night, cause we were beat from the drive. The day is over.

Monday morning arrives. Coffee is prepared and breakfast is had. We jumped in Breanna’s truck and scoped out more rails around Calgary. We know what we wanted to hit and what days to hit them on. Some of the rails were at schools so we need to hit them at night or on the weekend. After scoping rails for a bit, we registered for the contest and rode at C.O.P for a couple runs. It was icy but fun. After that, we checked into our hotel and hit the hot tub and waterslide.

It’s been nothing but productive with this crew so far. Be sure to check the shots out in the New Alterna Movie for 2011!

Frozen Milk

Had an interesting day today to say the least with Chris Rasman, Jesmond Dubeau and Colin D Watt. It was one of those days that seemed like you could drop almost anything. Jez and Rasman stepped up to hitting some early morning pillows and as the day went on things didn't really come into place for us. Got stuck, rolled a sled, got stuck, hit a tree, got stuck, D watts milk froze so in the end we decided to not look further than the Panda and we made something work.

Early season update...

Here are a few pics from a recent shoot at Brandywine with Jesmond, JF and photographer John Scarth.

Jesmonds idea was to naturally transfer this ice wall/gap. As you can see by his bomb hole near the lower left hand corner of the photo he came within a foot of disaster almost landing on the exposed ice.

His second attempt bucked him and sent him in the direction of John Scarth who was planted in the gut of the ice gap. Jez was a c-hair away from landing directly on Scarth so we decided to move on.

Sunset Glacier Heli Shoot

Just finished a very successful sunset Heli shoot on the Whistler Glacier. We have been planning this shoot for quite some time now and finally all the pieces came together and we had a perfect day to get into the bird and get a few last shots for our film Hello World.

Riders Chris Dufficy, Jesmond Dubeau and Chris Rasman were sessioning the perfectly cut Billabong Ante jump. We teamed up with Darren Rayner on this shoot so we had a crew of about 7 riders in total sessioning. The session started off with a warm up double back late 180 (looked like a double late bs rodeo) from Duff no big deal. The session lasted for about an hour and a half and we tried filming for our first time with a RED camera from the heli and another on the ground. Stay tuned to SBC for more info on what we were trying with the camera operated by Bryant Bell on the ground (could be a first if all things come together).

Jesmond and his unstoppable energy was killing it late into the evening look out for a stand out segment from Jes in this years film.

Grouse Session Great Success...

2 Days of shredding at Grouse concluded last night at are around midnight with probably our most productive Grouse Session to date. Day one started of pretty mellow with exception of a few close decapitations. Day 2 started off with a step up session that we have considered doing for quite some time. We were not sure if the crew would have enough speed to make the step up but as we discovered their was plenty some serious hammers were thrown down. The day ended with a dismal effort from the Vancouver Canucks but soon was forgotten when we got into our night session. Thank You to Bern & Jonathan from Atomic2 Creative Lighting these guys lit the NBC Today show during the Olympics the lights were sick.

HUGE shout out to Grouse Mountain especially the entire Grouse Park Crew that came out to help these guys came up with all the park designs and followed through with little to no sleep. These guys killed it!

For the first time in ten years, the King Of The Hill big mountain freestyle contest returned from it's absence to crown a new king and queen. As if he had been training for this very moment in the ten year hiatus of the contest, it was no surprise that Travis Rice raised the sword that proclaimed him the new King Of The Hill. Vera Jannsen stood alongside him, raising a blade of her own as Queen of the Hill. Rob Kingwell, an already established halfpipe-turned-big mountain rider, came in second, and speaking to his incredible versatility as a rider, coming off an Olympic halfpipe bronze medal, Scotty Lago got third.

we're in ALASKA !!!

After the craziest drive ever (4 days of running into EVERY problem you could think of!), Dave Short, Hock, Josh and I finally made it to the Thompson Pass Parking lot that will be our home for the next two weeks. We are RV-camping and shredding with legends Nick Perata, Julie Zell, Mike Basich, Shawn Farmer, and contemporary heros like Travis Rice, Landvik, and Dave Short :)
yesterday was the King Of The Hill, which i successfully completed even though my right knee is pet-dinosaur-purple and the size of a fat chick.
might have had a little sledding incident, going a bit too fast down these.... was almost gonna say "hills" but i guess i learned the hard way that they are huge MOUNTAINS.

Its been an awesome stay in Turkey. partying it up, meeting new people, hitting kickers and scoring some freshies. Riding with the Alterna crew has been fun times!! Stoked to be riding with new fresh meat and getting to know these crazy Canucks! Phil Tifo killed it on the organizing and Carlo is making magic happen!

Erzurum has been around since 4000BC. This is a small fragment of it. the top towers origin story: engineer vs. student. they both build one tower, the student built the better one, so the engineer suicides, then the student feels remorse and suicides as well! Crazy huh!?

Snow fleas & Missiles? in Erzurum...

We have scoped the palandoken mountain and come across a few projects for the next few days. The crew went in to town after our day on the hill and spent some time at the newly developed Erzurum ice rink. Thanks to Phil Tifo and the Turkey Tourism board for making this trip possible.

Little villa on the resort. Weve been told that this has been passed down through the same family for 500 years.

As we arrived to our destination at Erzurum in the Mountains of Turkey. Once again we have lucked out and were able to watch the most anticipated game of the year on a 10x10 projection TV at our Hotel. Kind of surreal seeing shots of Vancouver and the fans while we are all the way over here. Its really funny how it always seems to work out well for us. Literally, the middle of no where.. Nearly touching Iraq and Russsia. Now its time for some shred and "high octane apres" sessions.. Thank you lonely planet handboook..

Thanks again to the Turkish tourism board for all the amazing hospitality we have received on this trip.

Istanbul, Turkey - The Grand Bizarre...

After being awake travelling for over 35 hours we descended upon Turkey and made the most of a down day. We rolled into Istanbul and soaked in some culture before leaving on our first mission to the Palandonken resort in Erzurum tomorrow morning.

Tourism Turkey had it dialed for us. 50 people waiting for cabs and these vans out side of the airport, yet we get 2 of them for 5 of us. 1 van for our bags, one for our exhausted, smelly canadian bodys.

The legendary blue mosk. Probably one of the craziest man made things our crew has seen yet. Not too much blue about it though..

We went to check out the Mall near the hotel we are staying at and found this little shred shop that for some reason sells tennis rackets. And Marius's pro model jacket!

Marius is big in Turkey! Pleasing the fans with some very facebookable photos..

We met the turkish santa! That smile was not going anywhere and it was making this guys soo much money. Everytime we walked by him later in the day he yelled "HELLO CANADA!"

The Grad Bizarre was a heeaavy culture shock for the crew.

No marked prices. Everything in this place is about haggling. You ask how much, they ask "how much you think"?, then its a fast paced price argument until one side caves.

These fellas seemed like our best turkish friends until we found out they marked up the turkish delight we bought by 200%..

Here we Come...

The war is over, and we are on our way back Home! We are currently in Vienna, staying the night before we catch our flight in the morning. The trip has been incredible. Bosnia was littered with the reminance of war, lots of meat+cheese and cigarette drenched clothing. Slovenia had great food, great people and fantastic night life! Even though the majority of our time was spent in Sarejavo, both places have cheap food, cheap drinks and an oozing European feel.

We are all stoked to get back home and are convinced you will like the Bosnia section in the up and coming Alterna Movie!

Olympic Spirit

We came across a war struck hotel that was built for the 1984 winter olympics here in Sarajevo. Doesn't look like an elite hotel anymore! We also stumbled upon the Olympic Ski Jump from the '84 games. Defs a much smaller venue than what we got going on in Van!

The rain has started and we have a full day of travel to get back to Maribor. If there is enough snow left over on our way back through Croatia, we will hit 2 rails that have already been scoped for us!

Keep your fingies crossed for some left-over snow!

Been out in the Whistler backcountry shredding with Dave Short and Hockenstein. We've been on a superfun program - just drawing our lines on to the white untouched mountains and exploring new valleys and bowls.

Not everyday do you come across a sign that warns, beware of land mines. Only in Bosnia I guess? Other than that, Jahorina rocks! Fresh pow, small lift lines and the most amazing thing ever; Concession stands at the bottom of every chair lift! The ski patrol on the other hand are very tight. We got kicked out of 4 spots in one day. even the most mellow of sections on the side of cat tracks. I guess they never see people building jumps and/or riding powder.

No matter where you go, you can not escape remnants from the war. The craziest thing to see, is the occupied apartment buildings littered with bullet holes. Some even have larger holes from either tanks or rocket launchers.

Bosnia...Here we Come!

Packed up the van and headed South through Croatia and into Bosnia. Roads were covered with snow and our 8hour drive took us 12. The border crossing into Bosnia was very difficult, we almost had to spend the night in the van but with the right paper work and $fee$ for bringing in our generator we made it through!

If you like MEAT+CHEESE+BREAD! You will love Sarejevo! That lovely combination of carbs and protien is served
for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (NO EXCEPTIONS!).

After Our breakfast of you know what, we headed to Jahorina to hit up a local resort. The locals here are afraid of powder and stay on the groomers which makes for good times for us! Started dumping in the evening and continued all night in the city. Small change of plans and we have decided to do some jibbing for the next couple of days.

Until later, don't take your vegies for granted...

We've been having some lovely conditions over here in the west coast of BRITISH COLUMBIA. Despite the lack of parking, inflating prices, and hundreds of police officers with little to do except write tickets, ( in case you haven't heard, there is a large sporting event going on in whistler/vancouver right now) our crew has kept high spirits and continues to kill it! Here are some photos from a day building a jump on Blackcomb mountain and another day up sledding near Pemberton (check the photo's of photographer Phil Tifo shreddin some lines).

Bosnia Road Team Reporting ->

We have made it to Slovenia. It took us 24hrs of traveling to get here including lay overs and driving. Our one stop was Amsterdam for 5 hours and we were able to catch a train into the city center. Definetely a must see! The snow is falling and will continue to fall here in Slovenia. We are all extremely jet lagged and slept 13hours last night. Today we set out on the town of Maribor in the snow to look for some lines and jibs for tomorrow morning before we embark on our 8hour Drive to Boznia.

Bosnia bound...

Our first overseas trip of the season kicked off today. John Scarth, Jesmond Dubeau, JF Fortin and filmer Byron Kopman are heading over to meet Tadej Valentan and Domen Bizjack for a trip we are doing in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. This war torn country is run by three gangs who are fighting for control of the country. According to Domen (our slovenian bud) its pretty mellow at the moment but should make for an interesting segment. Scarth was pumped on going to an area of the world that was not so posh, definitely a contrast to what our crew is used to . Stay tuned for more photos from this trip.

Pemberton Ice Cap...

Last week we went up to the Pemberton ice cap with Dufficy, Gaetan and Benji. Duff and Benji hit a jump that looked like a massive diving board. The day crapped out on us by mid afternoon but we were able to get a few shots in the bag before heading into the trees.

We just came off a pretty nice week of filming up here in BC's backcountry. Conditions were prime and our crews were itching to ride some pow. Didn't really bother building any booters just wanted to strap in and session natural lines and drops.

Our crew for one of the days was Dufficy, Benji, Gaetan and Chris Rasman. Here are a few pics from one day filming.

We took up Gerhard Gross from SBC magazine this day so look out for a video he is going to release in the near future about shooting with Alterna.

Our studio shoot for Elektro is now over and went almost to perfection. We had a rare opportunity to have all the featured riders in Elektro for one day in a pretty slick looking studio. Many thanks to all who helped out making this one of the most productive and fun shoots of the year.

The Quiksilver Showdown Over the City is one of the top snowboarding events in Canada that attracts pros and ams alike from across the continent and from around the world. Going into its 3rd year, the hype continues to build about who will be the next stand out and who will walk away with the $20K in cash!

This year’s event is a Men Only format and is a 3-Star designation on the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. From this, competitors earn valuable tour points that will rank them internationally as well as gain them even more exposure and coverage in the international tour spotlight.

09 Alterna release named...

After much debate and countless names presented. We have named our Alterna 09 release Elektro. We will post a blog shortly as to how we came up with the name and show you our inspriation for this title. I guess spending a bunch of time in Europe definetely helped with this choice of title. Last year we were drinking Knockout beer in India this year we came up with Elektro also on a feature trip that will be highlighted in our film.

Day two of our Grouse Session started a bit slow with everyone pretty beat up from yesterdays jump session. After numerous coffees and a few Bob Marley tracks we got down to business once again.

Spring Grouse Shoot Day 1...

Day one of our Spring Session at Grouse Mountain turned out to be another amazing experience. We almost had our entire crew out for this session plus a ton of friends that we invited to join this stress free super fun session. Some of the other invitees were Mikey Rencz, Eero Niemela, Wiley T, Beau Bishop, Barry Hartman even currently injured Chris Dufficy joined us for some good times.

After a successful two days of shooting the Showdown over the city. We were invited by Grouse Mountain to hold a private media session. Riders in attendance were Matt Belzile, Craig Beaulieu, Seb Toots, JF Fortin, Chris "hungry balls" Rasman and a few other invitees who all killed it.

It was an amazing sunset session that did not wrap up until the sun was entirely set. These are the best types of sessions cause everyone was elevating their game and had a blast doing it.

Thanks to all the Grouse employees that helped us out and big thanks to Mr. Silcock.

Behind the scenes of the Showdown Over the city...

So we just finished shooting the Quiksilver Showdown over the city last Fri and Sat. The conditions made it difficult to keep our gear dry but when the finals kicked in Saturday afternoon the skies parted and some pretty sick footage was captured. Seb Toots did not disappoint and stomped his signature trick the "tootsie roll" to ride away from the comp with 10gs.

We will be releasing the Showdown video within 2 weeks so keep checkin back to see how the event unfolded.

PS We went up Sunday with a few Alterna riders plus friends and Murphys law it was completely blue byrd. Some pretty amazing stuff went down and will blog that shoot tomorrow.
